The Legend: Ravana and the Atma Linga 🕉️
The history of Murudeshwar goes back to the Treta Yuga.
- Ravana's Penance: The Demon King Ravana performed rigorous penance to please Lord Shiva. He wanted the "Atma Linga" (Soul of Shiva) to attain immortality.
- The Condition: Shiva granted the boon but with a strict condition: "Do not place the Linga on the ground before reaching Lanka. If you do, it will get fixed there forever."
- The Trick: Sensing danger, Lord Vishnu and Ganesha devised a plan. As Ravana reached Gokarna, Vishnu blotted out the sun, creating an illusion of dusk. Ravana, a devout Brahmin, had to perform his evening Sandhyavandanam prayers.
- Ganesha's Role: Ganesha appeared as a shepherd boy. Ravana asked him to hold the Linga. Ganesha agreed but said he would call Ravana thrice, and if he didn't return, he would place it down.
- The Establishment: Ravana got delayed. Ganesha called thrice and placed the Linga on the ground. It got firmly fixed.
- Murudeshwar Born: Furious, Ravana tried to uproot the Linga. He threw away the coverings of the Linga. The cloth covering the Linga fell at Mrideshwara (now Murudeshwar). The main Linga remained at Gokarna (Mahabaleshwar Temple).
Thus, the sanctum of Murudeshwar houses a piece of the original divine Atma Linga!
